Chichen Wonders

9 10 2012

In Mexico I had the great privilege of seeing one of the seven new Wonders of the World. My husband and I visited Chichen Itza (chee-chehn eet-sah) this means: “Mouth of the well of the Itza”. The site covers 6 square miles and the main attraction is the central square based, stepped pyramid El Castillo de la Serpiente Emplumada, which means “Castle of the Plumed Serpent,”

Our guide was adamant that when we returned to England we would not describe this building as a house but rather as a calandar. While I cannot recall all the mathematics involved, there is significance in the number of steps and certain additions and multiplications

The New Seven Wonders of the world is a list created on 07/07/2007 following 7 years of planning.

The others are:

Great Wall of China

Collosseum – Rome

Petra – Jordan

Machu Picchu – Peru

Taj Mahal – India

Christ the Redeemer – Rio de Janeiro

I have decided to make it a personal goal to visit all 7 at some point in my life. It seems a worthy goal and a fairly realistic and achievable one. We are already planning a trip to Rome with my parents within the next year or so and we have always wanted to visit Rio. Maybe we could take inspiration from this list to inform our choices of holiday destinations in the future.

For now it’s one down and six to go.
